Akiko Iwanami, High School Program Coordinator

Akiko Iwanami, High School Program Coordinator

Hello! My name is Akiko Iwanami.

I am the High School Program Coordinator for international High School students.

I'm from Tokyo, Japan. I went to Jissen Girl's High school. I received a bachelor and a masters degree in art, Japanese literature from Rikkyo University. I specialized in poetry in Heian and Middle Age. After university, I taught Japanese Literature for 6 years in a high school in Tokyo.

Although I spent a lot of time in Japanese, I always enjoyed participating in international activities and events. In 1999, I was part of an international program called “The Ship for World Youth" organized by the Japanese government. As one of the representatives of Japan, I travelled with people from 17 countries in a cruiseship for 2 months experiencing different cultures around the world.

I've been here in Toronto for 13 years so far. Moving from Tokyo to Toronto, leaving all my family and friends behind, was tough. It took a long time for me to get used to a new language, city and culture. Now I feel comfortable and I love being here! I love the four seasons, eating nice food, swimming, paddle boarding, reading, camping and spending time with my family. I speak Japanese, English and a little Turkish.

When you arrive in Canada, I'm sure some students will experience similar challenges to what I had 13 years ago. I know them very well. Now I am here to support you overcome those challenges and start enjoying your stay in our beautiful Canada. When you need help or want to talk to someone, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I will be listening…

What I like about MLI:  People here are very energetic, motivated, and responsible for students.  We have very welcoming atmosphere and diversity in the office.
